Tylenol vs. Chiropractic: What the Research Says About Back Pain

The British Medical Journal found Tylenol doesn't reduce low back pain intensity or disability. The ACP recommends spinal manipulation (chiropractic) as the safe, effective alternative.

Study Shows Tylenol Very Safe but Potentially Deadly

The British Medical Journal reports Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is the most commonly used drug for the treatment of pain and fever around the world. At the same time, it is capable of causing dose-related hepatocellular necrosis (liver death), responsible for nearly 500 deaths annually in the U.S. alone, as well as 100,000 calls to US Poison Control Centers, 50,000 emergency room visits and 10,000 hospitalizations per year.

The 2015 BMJ report also noted that drugs like Tylenol "did not reduce low back pain intensity, disability from the pain or improve the patient's short term quality of life." The report pointed out that a main cause of these hospitalizations and deaths was due to liver failure related to accidental overdosing.

    Chiropractic as a First-Line Treatment

Citing this study, the American College of Physicians states that spinal manipulation (i.e. Chiropractic Care) is among the most effective treatments for chronic and acute low back pain. The 2017 ACP study actually reviewed a culmination of 13 studies to formulate its conclusions. These guidelines point to spinal manipulation (i.e. chiropractic care) as among the most safe and effective treatments for chronic and acute low back pain.
